About the human spirit, loving freedom, life and each other.
"The Writings on the Wall" by Terry Tillman is my favorite Cold War book. I had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with the author shortly after the book was published and learned that his book is more than just historical - it is about the universal human spirit of loving freedon, life and each other. I commend the book to anyone interested in enhancing international understanding and world peace.

... it captures the essence of the times and the humanness.
"The Writings on the Wall" by Terry Tillman is without a doubt my favorite book on the Cold War and the breaking down of the Berlin Wall. In graphic pictures and quotes it captures the essence of the times and the humanness of what was going on, not just a factual account.

Wonderful book of powerful photographs and pearls of wisdom
"The Writings on the Wall" by Terry Tillman is a wonderful book of powerful photographs and pearls of wisdom by various people. The book inspired me to think about many levels of walls that we build, from emotional to the physical, and the power we have to knock them down.

On Yankee Station: The Naval Air War over Vietnam
Published in Hardcover by United States Naval Inst. (July, 1987)
Authors: John Nichols CDR. USN (Ret.), Barrett Tillman, and John B. Nicholls
Average review score:

Required reading
This book on the naval air war over Vietnam should be required reading not only for all military pilots, but for every military and civilian official who is involved in planning strategy, tactics, or military weapon procurement.
But don't get the idea it's a boring book; besides giving the reader a clear view of what happened in the air over Vietnam, the author makes his points in a very readable fashion, not by preaching but by simply pointing out what we did, and why we could have done so much better -- in the conduct of the war, in providing better (often SIMPLER) equipment, and in better training.
It's definitely worth obtaining from an out-of-print dealer or from your library. Even if you have no connection with the military, this will expand your understanding of that period in US history.

A masterwork of objective analysis.
This work is a clear-headed, no holds barred look at the Vietnam air war from the naval perspective. Don't let its even tone fool you. It cuts to the bone and damns by simple observation, with no need for editorializing by the authors. It points up the facts, fictions, failures and achievements of the naval air war against North Vietnam in a quick, easy style, with superb organization and excellent supporting material in the appendices. Any student of the Vietnam air war who misses this title is not a serious person. It is required reading on the subject, and should be complemented by Marshal Michel's "Clashes" for the USAF side of the story.

If you were there, it will tell you what you did!
I was LCDR meteorologist on USS Coral Sea during the same period as CDR Nichols. Through his book, I am able to understand many of the discrepancies in aerial warfare that I saw and did not understand at the time. I saved several to many pilots lives with my "not too optomistic" forecast during the "cratchin conditions" in the winters in Tonkin Gulf in 66 and 67. If I can locate CDR Nichols, I will personally shake his hand. I visited Vietnam, and Hanoi in 1995, and found absolutely no hostility, and found very little battle damage. After all, I briefed many Alfa strikes to Hanoi and I wanted to see what we had done, My daughter now lives in Hanoi and her husband is building a luxery hotel for western tourist and Japanese tourist. She lives on a Hanoi cul-de-sac and all the neighbors are very friendly and they share food, baby sitting and shopping sprees. Isn't it funny how the times change? I love it... Wildbill

Profit Without Honor (Trade Version): White Collar Crime and the Looting of America
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (30 July, 1997)
Authors: Stephen M. Rosoff, Henry N. Pontell, Robert Tillman, and Henry M. Pontell
Average review score:

An Informative, Introductory Book
I utilize Profit Without Honor as one of the required textbooks in an college course I teach at Herkimer County Community College entitled CJ 122: Intoduction to Economic Crime Investigation.

I find the book is quite comprehensive, extensively researched and very well written. There is just enough theoretical foundations along with a true plethora of historical and recent examples to educate and inform. My students have received the book very well, commenting that while it is far reaching it is also a fairly easy "read" that isn't to confusing or overwhelming. It's my opinion that Profit Without Honor is an excellent introductory text to aquaint the casual reader or the student with the far reaching, comprehensive nature of economic crime, white collar crime and fraud present today.

I look forward to a third edition when recent incidents such as Enron, Arthur Anderson, WorldCom etc. would hopefully be addressed.

As a side note, the fraud realted quotes from motion pictures that serve as chapter headings are hilarious! (i.e. Teacher: What is the capital of Nebraska? First Student: Lincoln. Teacher: Right. Who freeded the slaves? Second Student: Lincoln Teacher: Right. Charles Keating cooked the books at what S&L? Third Student: Lincoln?)

A great book!
PROFIT WITHOUT HONOR combines immaculate scholarship, penetrating insight, and a witty and engaging style of writing. Readers will find material that will trigger righteous indignation, and insights that will make them nod in agreement and wonder why they hadn't thought of that. The authors provide a vast array of information on white-collar offenses that challenges current concentration on street law-breaking as the most serious crime problem in the United States.

Wow!
That is probably the wrong word to begin a critique of a book... PROFIT WITHOUT HONOR is one of the finest books that I have ever read on the subject of white-collar crime. Each chapter was outstanding: the writing style; the organization of material, past and present; the research; the footnotes. PROFIT WITHOUT HONOR is outstanding.

Dauntless: A Novel of Midway and Guadalcanal
Published in Hardcover by Bantam Doubleday Dell Pub (Trd) (June, 1992)
Author: Barrett Tillman
Average review score:

Excellent!
I picked this book up at a yard sale. I can't believe I hadn't heard of it before, but suffice to say, it was a page turner. It chronicles the exploits of a young dive bomber pilot, from the beginning of WWII to the Guadalcanal campaign.

I loved it so much, I ordered the sequel directly from Amazon.

Mr. Tillman, where is the third book?

A Novel of the Greatest Generation
Barrett Tillman is uniquely qualified to write this very exciting and authentic historical novel, which is far above the typical techno-thriller. And the author's comment is correct: the Kirkus Review does totally miss the point - scared but plucky young aviators are not inserted as a stock literary device, but because that's precisely who fought these titanic Pacific clashes. The true life heroism and sacrifice so well depicted is probably just incomprehensible to many "elites" today. Tillman is far more sympathetic in describing his Japanese sailors than most war authors, and is fair to the brave young men on both sides. Most of all, this is a great read - engrossing and informative.

A book that gives you the feel of being a there.
When I read both "Dauntless" and Barrett Tillman's follow on novel "Hellcat". I could almost smell the distinct odor that permeates a warship. A mixture of lube oil, ozone and red lead paint that I have only smelled aboard US Navy ships. From my vantage point of having spent a large portion of my adult life aboard aircraft carriers, from the mid 60s through 1990, I can say Tillman has captured the feel of the ship. Barrett Tillman has the unique ability to take those tactile and emotional cues and pack them into the pages of the book. There are several excelent books that tell stories of the battles of Coral Sea, Midway and the Eastern Solomons from the historian's point of view, but Tillman tells you what it must have felt like to be there. Tillman knows his subject matter. He restored and flew a WWII Dauntless. He has spent a great amount of time with the men who fought these battles. I suspect that, the reason his books have the feel of being there is that Tillman is an expert at pulling that out of these vets and alowing the rest of us to experiance what they experianced. He transmits the excitement of being in a dangerous situation, and the fear of seeing the thing that might end your own life. He has captured the terible feeling of loss, when you know a friend is gone for ever. The only thing I don't like about "Dauntless" is that it's out of print! I can't see why "Dauntless" isn't still on the shelves. I had to really search for it. When I found it, I found my self saying, "just one more page" at 3AM. Some publisher is missing a good bet here.

High Praise for These Two Authors
This book is packed with what every parent of every school age child should be aware of in our society today. The authors, both being in the teaching profession for many years, show the wealth of experience they have gained over the course of their careers in education. Very informative read!

Great Information Every Parent and Educator's Library
A School for Every Child is a well-written, informative guide to every type of education offered to the public. It is a must for parents to explore various types of educational institutions and opportunities that are available to meet the vast array of learning styles of children. Educators will appreciate the descriptions and statistical research included for each school. I especially enjoyed the chapters on charter schools and Christian schools.

critical issue of the day
A timely, informed book that explains the present problems in education today. Every school should have this book in their libraries. Education is possible in this country today not just school attendance. Informed parents will see that their children do have a right to first rate education whether in the public schools or a school of choice. It is time for our public schools to recognize the problems facing them and do something about it.

Hellcats: A Novel of War in the Pacific
Published in Hardcover by Brasseys, Inc. (August, 1996)
Author: Barrett Tillman
Average review score:

Barrett Tillman as an author of Historical Fiction
Mr. Tillman represents one of the best of the breed of historical novelists; he is well-versed in the historical facts and technological details of his subject matter, yet also has the artistic gift of being able to engage the reader by creating interesting characters caught up in the consequences of tremendously important global events.

Both Dauntless! and Hellcats are superb fictional treatments of what it might have been like to fight and survive the Pacific War as a young US Naval aviator.

I hope that the final episode of the trilogy, Sabrejets, will actually be finished and published; I'll be the first in line to purchase it. (And no, I'm not putting my own hard copies of either Dauntless or Hellcats up for sale on E-bay---they'll stay on my bookshelf for years to come.)

Mr. Tillman, you please keep at it! (and by the way, your non-fiction dissertations on the various aircraft used in the Pacific War are superb as well.)

"Sabrejet" update
The intended sequel to "Hellcats" was to be "Sabrejet," completing the Rogers/Sakaida trilogy begun in "Dauntless." The publisher of "Hellcats" lapsed from the military fiction market shortly after publication, but since then has resumed interest in the field. I hope to pursue the Korean War saga and will try to notify this site accordingly.
Thanks to everyone who's expressed interest in "Sabrejet" over the years.
(I'd not bother with a rating of my own book if I could post otherwise!)

Real Carrier Flying Action
A great read for anyone with an interest in World War II aviation. Tillman certainly knows his stuff... Exciting and well written.

I only gave the first book in the trilogy, "Dauntless, the Novel" 4 stars, but "Hellcats" is a full 5 star read. Now, if someone would only publish the third book, "Sabrejets, the Novel" and follow his fascinating main characters into Korea.

Sixth Battle: A Novel of the Next War
Published in Paperback by Bantam Books (April, 1992)
Author: Barrett Tillman
Average review score:

What A Book !
This book is a lost gem compared to any other in its genre, its descriptions of modern naval warfare put Clancy to shame. Its story line is similar to Larry Bonds "Cauldron" but places the emphasis on the action at sea but still carries the story of the land war very well. Why has he not written more books of this kind ?

The Bible of Modern Naval Warfare
The Sixth Battle describes a very technical detail of modern carrier war. I don't think all people can understand the true meaning of this book. But for naval warfare fans..this book is next to King James Bible. I always play the war in my head when I'm going to sleep. APG 71 Up.....Fox Three...Fox Three.

Great mental candy
This book is by far, the best Naval book I've read, followed by Red Storm Rising. The level of technological content and tactics is well to the liking of readers of Tom Clancy or Dale Brown. It contains suspense, action, anything you could ask for. This would make a great movie...IF they follow the book.

Clicking With Your Dog: Step-By-Step in Pictures
Published in Paperback by Sunshine Books (September, 2001)
Author: Peggy Tillman

The Book We've Been Waiting For!
It took me five minutes of looking through "Clicking with Your Dog" to realize it's the book we've been dreaming of for our clients. Moments later we'd already ordered 100 copies.

This book gets the average American started on the right foot with clicker training. It doesn't bog down the people who "just want to know how to do it" yet directs those of us who can't get enough to further information. It provides excellent guidance to children who are beginning to train and communicate with their dogs. I can only hope 4-H training groups will make it their manual.

The majority of owners who come to see us for assistance with their pet's behavior problems leave with a clicker in their hand. Now they'll be leaving with a clicker in one hand and "Clicking with Your Dog" in the other hand.

Soul Food: Novel
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Harper Mass Market Paperbacks (October, 1997)
Authors: LaJoyce Brookshire and George, Jr Tillman
Average review score:

Just like the movie
I wanted to read the novel soul food to see if it included anything that was left out on the movie, I was surprised to see that the book, and movie was pretty much the same with only a few small differences. I didn't realize Terri was so jealous of Maxine. I liked knowing what the characthers were thinking.

The movie wuz tha bomb
Soul Food was a heart felt movie and it was like real people really living that particular life that was in the movie. And the characters were great especially Nia, Mekhi, Brandon, and Vivica. The book was just like the movie and had a couple parts added which is always cool.

AN EXCELLENT, SOUL-STIRRING NOVEL!
THE NOVEL, SOUL FOOD, WAS AN EXCELLENT COMPANION TO THE MOVIE. THE READER COULD REALLY FEEL THE EMOTIONS OF THE CHARACTERS. FOR EXAMPLE, THE WISDOM OF MAMA JOE REMINDS US OF OUR OWN PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS WHO STRUGGLE TO KEEP THE BLACK FAMILY TOGETHER THROUGHOUT HISTORY. ACCOLADES TO THE AUTHOR, LAJOYCE BROOKSHIRE ON A THOUGHT-PROVOKING BOOK.
